What is the EFS-1 User Interface and TWAIN Data Source?

The EFS-1 UI/Data Source, also known as the User Interface or simply "UI", is a small software application that retrieves and processes images from your EFS-1. The Data Source is a unique Windows application that retrieves images stored in the (e)film cartridge memory or the (e)box storage module. Upon retrieval of images, the UI completes the processing of each image. The UI presents those images as thumbnail-sized images, and stores the image files as Digital Negatives.

The EFS-1 UI allows you to adjust and pre-process your images before they are transferred to an imaging application or saved to a common file format. The EFS-1 UI has advanced color science and image processing controls that allow you to derive maximum performance from your (e)film images. There are distinct advantages to using the advanced color-processing functionality built in to the EFS-1 UI. These advantages are described later in this guide in the Advanced Image Management section.

TWAIN Data Source. The EFS-1 UI acts as a intermediary between hardware (EFS-1 components) and software, such as Photoshop. The EFS-1 data source serves as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop. As a Twain data source you may utilize the UI to move images from EFS-1 to your host computer, and into your favorite imaging application. You may think of the UI as a "translator" between the EFS-1 hardware and your imaging software.

Stand-Alone Application. The EFS-1 UI also serves as a stand-alone Windows application for processing EFS-1 images. The UI allows you to open both Digital Negatives and Vaults. You may use the EFS-1 for image enhancements functions such as sharpening, brightness & contrast, lighting conditions, levels, and more. The EFS-1 UI will allow you to adjust your images and then save them as JPG, TIF, or BMP files.

Is the UI/Data Source Required?

Yes, you must use the UI/Data Source to download images from EFS-1. The EFS-1 UI/Data Source is the only application or utility that can correctly download and process image data from the EFS-1. The EFS-1 UI/Data Source invokes the device-level drivers that determine which EFS-1 devices (e-film, e-port, e-box) are present, and opens communication channels to communicate between EFS-1 hardware and your computer. As images are downloaded from (e)film to host computer, the data source completes the final stages of image processing and applies color science to each image.

Once the thumbnails images are displayed in the UI, you have two options:

1) You may convert and save your images to a JPG, TIF, or BMP.

2) You may transfer your images to an imaging application program, such as Photoshop.

How Does the UI/Data Source Work?

There are two ways to use the EFS-1 UI/Data Source. The EFS-1 data source has two modes.

1) You may "call" the Twain data source from any Twain-aware Windows program (as described above), or

2) You may start the data source as a stand-alone Windows application. The UI will open as a regular Windows program and full EFS-1 functionality will be available, with the ability save images as JPG, BMP, or TIF.
