EFS-1 UI/DS and Photoshop 6.0 -

TWAIN-acquisition using Photoshop 6.0 -

The EFS-1 works well with Adobe Photoshop 6. Photoshop 6 is an imaging application that will accept 16-bit image transfers. This feature offers even greater opportunity to get the maximum image performance from your EFS-1 system.

This section describes how Photoshop 6 and the EFS-1 UI/DS work together.

Photoshop 6 can "Import" TWAIN Data in three steps
Adobe Photoshop 6.0 does not feature a Quick Start Screen, but it requires only three clicks to call the EFS-1 TWAIN Data Source.
  • Start Photoshop 6.
  • Click on
    1. File
    2. Import
    3. "Silicon Film TWAIN Data Source"

The EFS-1 TWAIN Data Source will be "called."

You may download images from (e)film, open previously downloaded digital negatives, or open a vault.

Transfer Images from the EFS-1 UI/DS workspace to Photoshop -

After opening downloading or opening images in the EFS-1 UI, select those which you wish to transfer to Photoshop. You may transfer images to Photoshop in either of two ways.

1. Transfer the selected images by using either the File Menu:

2. Or, click on the Transfer icon:

  • File
  • Transfer to App
Transfering images using the File menu
Transfering images to the application using the toolbar button

After you issue the command to transfer images to the application, you will be presented with a choice of 8-bit,or 16-bit image transfer.

8-bit is the default choice. Unlike many imaging applications, Photoshop 6 will accept 16-bit transfers, and you may select either mode. 16-bit transfers offer somewhat greater latitude of adjustment of the transferred image within Photoshop.

By default all transfers will be 8-bit since most applications only support 8-bit. Photoshop 6 will support either 8 or 16 bit.

Important Note: After images are transferred to Photoshop, the EFS-1 UI/DS is still open and active. However, it may be minimized to the Windows task bar.

  • If you transfer only one image from the EFS-1 UI/DS to Photoshop, the UI/DS remains maximized (at it's full size) on your display screen, assuming that you may wish to transfer another image. Very possibly, you may wish to return to the EFS-1 UI/DS to locate and transfer additional images.
  • However, if you transfer two or more images the UI/DS will automatically minimize (to the task bar) after the images have transferred.

It is important to realize that a TWAIN relationship between a data source (EFS-1 UI/DS) and a TWAIN-aware application (Photoshop) is a modal relationship, meaning only one of the two entities has control, or focus.

If the EFS-1 UI/DS is open, it will have the "focus". If this occurs it may appear that Photoshop is unresponsive, or even locked. To transfer control to Photoshop simply close the EFS-1 UI/DS and Photoshop will have full control over the images you have just transferred.

Sometimes it is easy to forget to close the UI before going back to Photoshop. If you are experiencing odd behavior with Photoshop after a transfer operation, look at your task bar to see if the EFS-1 UI/DS is still running:

When the EFS-1 UI/DS is running (but minimized) it will appear in the Windows task bar
If this is the case, and you are finished with the EFS-1 UI/DS, click on the Silicon Film task bar to re-open it. Then, close the EFS-1 UI/DS to end the TWAIN session and control will revert back to Photoshop.
